Gaining an Edge on College Admission

03/07/2017

Gaining admission into the college of your choice requires research, tenacity, confidence and planning. Yes, today is only March 7th. Spring has not yet arrived, so why should current juniors in high school begin the process now? The answer is simple: because you want an edge.

Admissions officers want to learn about their prospective students. Simply completing an application only scratches the surface for earning a spot. A potential student needs to visit campus; complete an interview (when available); and present him and herself most favorably. The personal essay has become one of the key ingredients towards earning matriculation at that #1 dream school. A visit or interview will set you apart from other applicants.

What should you be doing now? Plan those day trips to compare and contrast campuses. You will learn whether or not you truly do prefer a city school versus a more rural setting. Consider your place among more than ten thousand students. Can you picture yourself amidst such a large crowd or do you need more personalized attention? Every college and university has its own personality. Does that "feel" fit your own sense of Self? Do the academic programs offer enough diversity for your interests?

Begin consideration of which school is right for you. Start scheduling visits over the next few months. Peruse the common application for essay prompts to begin brainstorming. This summer, you shall gain more of an edge by writing your personal statements. Just think...you can begin your senior year with applications completed and a confident plan of moving forward.
